Book Report & Giveaway - Promise to Return, By Elizabeth Byler Younts

I know! There's a bonnet on the book. I don't read Amish, but this book came highly recommended, so I decided to give it a try. Namely because it is World War II era, and I'm always a good sucker for a GI story.

Guess what? I really, really liked it. I did!! It wasn't the stereotypical Amish novel, that are popular and well-written, but not quite my preference. This was rich with Amish heritage and the story of separation between a G.I. and his fiancee. Both Amish. Both fighting the restrictions of their culture while trying to reconcile the concept of peacemaking in a war that ripped the world of justice.

Elizabeth did a fantastic job in capturing the romance, keeping an authentic Amish flavor, while also satisfying my desire for good WWII fiction.

So which element would intrigue you the most? Romance, Amish, or WWII? Leave your answer in the comment and enter to win! :)

Winner of Dani Pettrey's book "Silenced" is: KAREN G!

  1. I don't usually read Amish fiction either. Or WWII era historical fiction, for that matter! But I am intrigued by this one, because I'm curious how the wartime setting plays out with the Amish characters who I would presume to be pacifist.

  2. I absolutely love reading Amish fiction! Especially Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter. My father-in-law served in the navy in WWII so I'm also interested in reading about those times in fiction. That's why I loved reading Cara Putman's book,
