Book Giveaways!!

Gabrielle Here:

This hasn't been a stellar week. On Monday, I had a second surgery on my sinuses (the first was in April), to correct a deviated septum. While in surgery, the doctor located a couple other issues that needed to be dealt with...which means I've been in a lot of pain this week. I was hoping to be on my feet by yesterday, at the very least, but I wasn't.

Today is the first day I actually woke up and felt like doing something...anything...so I loaded the dishwasher. Thankfully my husband has been keeping up with the chores, and my children have been with my mom, mother-in-law, and a friend, so the house is still in one piece.

As you can imagine, I've been watching a lot of television. I would love to read, but the pain has prevented me from straining my eyes too much. I'm an oldies kind of girl, so I've watched several classics, some comedies, some dramas, and some musicals. Yesterday I watched four Andy Hardy Movies (in between naps), starring Mickey Rooney. I've also watched the original Parent Trap, starring Hayley Mills, and several early 1930's films.

Because of the surgery, and the subsequent bed rest, I don't have much to offer today, so I thought it would be fun to ask a question and have a giveaway. And since Erica had some exceptional news this week, I'm offering one copy each of the novella collections we're in together (The Most Eligible Bachelor Collection and The Convenient Bride Collection) to celebrate her awesome achievement.

Here are my questions: When you're sick in bed, how do you prefer to pass the time? Reading, watching movies, playing games, sleeping, or a little of everything? Do you have any go-to movies or books that make you feel better?

To enter, please comment below. Next Wednesday, July 6th, I'll pick one random winner to receive both books and I'll announce the winner on my post next Thursday. To be eligible, you must live within the United States.

    1. Ah, Netflix! Being sick in bed is a good reason to binge on some good movies and television shows. What did we do before Netflix? :)

  3. I do a little of everything. I find a movie or tv show to watch while I lay down. I make sure it's something I've seen before because I'm sure to fall asleep. If I get to sore and stiff then I'll sit up and watch TV or read. Hope you feel better!

    1. I agree about the falling asleep part. I've watched the Andy Hardy movies so many times, I can practically quote them. But they make me feel all warm and snuggly--and if I fall asleep, I know what I missed. :) Thank you for the well-wishes, Nancy.

  4. Some reading, some sleeping, some movie-watching. ☺Depends on how I feel, exactly.

    1. You're right. It does depend on how I feel, too. Like I said, because of the nature of my discomfort, I wasn't able to read like I would have liked. Watching/listening to movies was more conducive to my rest this time.

    1. Thank you, Pam. I'm happy I'm doing better, too! :) Since I have four children, and they were at my mom's and my friend's house most of the time, it was strangely quiet around here. A nice change for the first day, but after that, it was too quiet!

  6. If I'm sick enough to be in bed I just want to be knocked out with drugs and left alone to sleep.
If it's surgery, I like to watch TV most of the time. I had knee replacement last year and I was on my back a lot, so I read when I could.

    1. I'm sorry to hear about your knee replacement, Gail. I hope all is back to normal now. I've heard those are very painful.

  7. Depends on what I'm sick with. I'm medically fragile with a rare disease that has no cure, and I'm in the hospital all lot. If I'm having a flare up of my disease, I stay in bed watching Netflix, lately I've been binge watching Friends. If it's just a virus, I read and cuddle my dogs.

  8. When I'm sick I sleep a lot, but when I'm awake I'll read and watch movies. My favorite movies to cheer me up are The Holiday and Serendipity.

  10. I'm glad you are on the mend. My husband was supposed to have sinus & septum surgery years ago but chickened out. When I'm stuck in bed I like to read or listen to a book. I love old movies, there are several Doris Day movies that will cheer me up and since I know all the words to them, it's okay if I fall asleep.

    1. I almost chickened-out, too! I read quite a bit about the procedure and the recovery beforehand, and it was daunting (and has lived up to what I had expected). But, it's over and I'm on the mend. I LOVE Doris Day! She's one of my all-time favorite actresses. I love so many of her movies. She definitely cheers me up!

  11. oh man, you poor thing! I can't imagine how tired and exhausted you feel, just from the pain and recovery. Prayers for quicker recovery! I like to read or sleep for sure. Sometimes tv helps, but it's hard to find anything I like to watch, I'm an oldies type gal, too.

    1. Thank you for the prayers, Susan. I'm not much of a television person, so I struggle to find things to watch, as well. I'm thankful for my DVR and for our smart TV, so I can rent oldies on Amazon.

  12. Reading, sleeping, or watching TV and movies, in no order. I love watching the old movies from my late teen and college years, anything Disney, and preferably without children so I don't have to screen it for content as we watch it!! Bobbi Jo Champion

    1. Sounds fun, Bobbi Jo! It's interesting watching those old movies from my late teens and college days. I often forget how they go, but as soon as they start, it all comes flooding back! :)

  13. So sorry you had to go through this. Hopefully you'll feel better before too much longer. When I'm sick I read, or if I don't feel up to that, I'll watch TV, usually marathons of HGTV, but sometimes movies. It depends on what is on and my mood.

    1. I've watched some of those HGTV marathons! I especially like Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gains, and Property Brothers. I haven't watched them in a while--but it's fun when I've had a chance.
