#TBT What is it?

Today's Throwback Thursday is a "What is it?"

I'll give you some hints.

  • It was photographed at Waveland Plantation, Lexington, KY
  • It was on a dresser in a guest room
  • The house was built in 1844-48 by Daniel Boone Bryan, well-to-do descendant of Daniel Boone and successful hemp grower and livestock breeder.
  • The strand you see is fishing line thread tethering the item so nobody can pocket it and walk off with it (Result of there being no ropes or barricades behind which tourists were required to stand. We were free to walk around any room and view the artifacts up close--my kind of museum!)
Let me know in your comments if you've ever seen one of these before and what you think its use might've been.

    1. That's very useful! :) The docent described the trimming process as needing to be done several times every evening, because the candles were made of tallow, and a long, burnt wick would bend over as the candle burned. Once the wick started to tip over, it was cut, the burnt end falling into the little box, and the candle would be re-lit. :)

  3. At my age, have seen a lot of antiques - however, this is one that I haven't. Will have to make a point of seeing this museum since it's less than 1 1/2 hours from me. Thanks for the info, Erica!!

    2. Bonnie, visit the Lexington Visitor's Bureau just a few blocks south of the Mary Todd Lincoln House and buy the coupon for seeing four houses for $20. You'll save a bundle. The houses include the Todd house, Waveland, The Henry Clay House, and the Hunt-Morgan house. :)
